In these days of Ciguatera, fishing or spearfishing for reef species like grouper, for instance, begins to be more akin to Russian roulette than putting protein on the table and it is only going to get scarier. Which leaves us with pelagic species like Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and so on…
Of course, spearfishing for mahi or tuna in blue water is a whole different skill and mind set than shallow water diving and it might not be for everyone, as there is a very real and steep learning curve involved.
Which brings us to the almost coffee table tome “BlueWater Hunting and Freediving” by Terry Maas, which is as close a thing to a bible on technique as you can find, and deserves to be read and re-read as most can be taken as scripture…
Of course, these days there seems to be a growing trend for lighter European-style guns instead of the big Tuna guns of yore. In some circles there is much discussion of ways to adapt triggerless handspears and techniques for Blue Water hunting (which I’ll be going into detail soon come) which opens all sorts of interesting avenues to those of us on sailboats who find the carrying of spearguns problematic.
