The project list and some handline goodness…

I rowed past a sailboat the other day with a pair of fishing rods rotting on their pushpit… Bummer really, the reels alone were worth over a thousand bucks! Sadly you get used to seeing dead or dying rods and reels here in the Caribbean because a lot of folks simply don’t fish these days from sailboats if there is hassle involved…

I’ve mentioned before that on “So It Goes” most serious fishing is done by handline and fishing of the “for pleasure” variety tends to be on fly or light spinning tackle. The advantage, of course, is that all the fishing gear stows in lockers or out of the way spaces and doesn’t sit in the sun moldering away when not in use.

That said, every once in awhile I have to take out all of the gear and do the maintenance gig. Check lines, chase rust, and make sure all the reels are lubed. The beauty of handlines is there is pretty much zero maintenance or hassle factor. So, all in all, it’s a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours in the cockpit while listening to music…

By the way, several people have written and asked about where to find the sort of handlines I use…

For starters, you might want to check out WaayCool Handlines as their super heavy duty Deep Sea and Kayak models are both well suited to sailboat trolling…

Beale Paddles also makes an excellent lighter duty handline that’s well worth taking a look at…

Then again, it’s hardly rocket science and you could easily build your own!
